Saroyan decided to become a writer after his mother showed him some of his father’s writings. The father is dead, the eldest son Marcus is in the war, the mother works in a factory, the daughter has left school and is trying to find some work, the year-old Homer works as a telegraph messenger to help support the family, including his younger brother, the four-year-old Ulysses.
