This book was highly recommended by someone whom I respect. The plot is simple and the characters are good natured hometown folks struggling to get by during the war. He changes the name of Fresno to ‘Itahca’ in his tale and the main characters are Ulysses and Homer two brothers. Oct 20, Paola rated it really liked it. The audiobook narration is by Meg Ryan.

Saroyan decided to become a writer after his mother showed him some of his father’s writings. The descriptions of the town and the people provide an interesting snapshot into what life was like for those living in small towns and having the deaths of neighbors and sons trickle in. The father is dead, the eldest son Marcus is in the war, the mother works in a factory, the daughter has left school and is trying to find some work, the year-old Homer works as a telegraph messenger to help support the family, including his younger brother, the four-year-old Ulysses.
Home is where the Heart is Set in California’s rural wine country in the mid ‘s this novel introduces readers to the Macauley family of fictitious Ithaca. The manager of the office, Mr Spangler, who becomes a father figure to Homer, is wise, loving, forgiving, understanding, and all-in-all, angelic.
