Bernhard Schlink: Liebesfluchten (Flights of Love)

The stories are tightly constructed and the writing crisply realistic. Already an enormous success in flghts author’s native Germany, Flights of Love is certain to be celebrated, discussed, read and re-read.


I would recommend this to those looking for a quick read about love. I won’t spoil any berrnhard elements, so I’ll just mention that I find the final scene of “The Son” to be brilliant and moving, “Sugar Peas” completely unexpected, and “The Circumcision” a very compelling two-sided portrait. One cannot control love. If at times his writing seems lf or cold, I wonder how much of that is due to the fact that we are reading translations.

An acrobatic philanderer one wife and two mistresses, all apparently quite happy begins to crack under the weight of his abundance. I wasn’t particularly impressed with the first three stories, though they are interesting, but I very much appreciated the last four. And not just history history, but the characters’ individual histories, everything they might have experienced up until these snapshots are revealed.
