Hard to pin down, though a number of readers call him the greatest sci-fi writer of all. This problem was resolved by having passengers travel stored in cold sleep, while the crew of the spaceship is composed of Habermans: It definitely smacks of the religiosity that he apparently acquired later in life.
The only thing I can’t tell you is which ones short stories or Norstrilia to read first. His style is smooth and almost poetic, his ideas extraordinary and still contemporary.

In a sense, that sentiment was expressed in a short story I wrote over 7 years ago, Humanity’s Goldwhich hinted at the lull that humanity encountered when there was no Grand Adventure in that case, the search for ever more libos waiting on the horizon.
There were depths rarely found in great literature, let alone pulp science fiction. When I started writing this review I had intended to point out some of my favourite stories in the collection. A problem for me in “reviewing” a story like this one: Reading Smith is really opening a door to imagination smmith grounded in strange people and strange societies that for all their strangeness are strangely familiar!
Love, apparently is the ultimate weapon. What happens on that sail-ship out in deep space is stunning and amazing, but pretty much a crazy-moving mystery to me. Linebarger as well, and is both deficient in quality and doesn’t fit well with the rest of the stories in the universe, particularly disappointing as a capstone narrative. These are futuristic tales told as myth, as legend, as a corxwainer of a distant and decayed past. Cordwainer Smith is timeless. She also apparently futzed around a bit with “Himself in Lkbros, a work which has been the subject of much drama, but I thought the story was great.
